Welcome to our Periolase site and the wonderful world of Laser Dentistry.
It has been estimated that at least 50 percent of Americans have gum disease and many of these people are not even aware of this fact. Are you one of them ? How would you know ? Can gum disease increase your chance of having a stroke or cardiovascular disease ?Is there an association between gum disease and diabetes or respiratory diseases ?Is there an association of gum disease and preterm or low birth weight babies ?What is gum disease ?
This site was designed to educate you about gum disease , diagnosis and current treatment modalities.
Gum disease is a bacterial infection in your gums. Some signs of this infection are puffy, bleeding gums or teeth that separate and become lose . Unfortunatley many of these signs are not readily apparent to many patients as the disease progresses into the bone around your teeth.
In order to diagnose gum disease you need to have a thorough comprehensive exam with x-rays and gum pocket measurements by your dentist. Catching this disease in the early stages can help you preserve the bone support around your teeth and ultimately allow you to keep your teeth.
If you are diagnosed by your dentist, he may recommend you see a special dentist with expertise in gum disease . This dentist is called a periodontist and has extra training in treating this disease.
Your dentist maybe able to treat your disease in the office without sending you to a specialist if he has had extensive postgraduate training in treating this infection. Especially true if he has been trained to use the Periolase MVP-7 laser which was specifically designed to treat gum disease infection in a patient freindly manner.
Periolase laser gum treatments are more conservative and comfortable than traditional cut and stitch surgery . Many patients who have been treated with traditional cutting away of the gums and stitching surgery complain of postoperative pain and suffering that can last for several weeks. Patients then become afraid of gum treatments. Patients being treated with the Laser return to work quickly often the same day and are much more comfortable after treatment.
Before you undergo any treatment you should find a dentist that uses the Periolase MVP-7 (other lasers have not demonstrated the same comfort and success as the Periolase laser so don't be fooled). Currently there are more than 700 dentists in the USA that own a periolase MVP-7 . If you ask dentists and periodontists that have used both tradtional cut and stitch surgery and the periolase laser treatment you will find that these dentists don't cut and stitch patients anymore and sleep better at night knowing they have helped patients with gum disease in a patient friendly manner. I am one of those dentists !I wouldn't let you cut and stitch me or any of my family or patients !
Some degrees of gum infection can be treated with a thorough cleaning of the teeth and sometimes with the aid of antibiotics and special rinses. You need to discuss the extent of your disease and treatment options with your dentist .
It is recommended by the American Dental Association to have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year and four times a year if you have had a history of gum disease. How many times have you had your teeth cleaned in the last ten years. if not twenty cleanings in the last ten years you may be at risk of having gum or periodontal disease. Go to your dentist today .
Gum disease infection is very difficult to completely cure and therefore it is importat to consider all of the possible treament modalities and weigh them against the risk of the disease from returning to the benefits of more conservative, patient freindly treatments.
